I hope that everyone managed to stay warm and dry during these past few days. My family was very fortunate - managed to keep power and only lost a few tree branches to the wind!

Just wanted to let you know that the Fall Festival party has been postponed until Friday at 2:15. The walk will also be on Friday at 9 am. So hold your costumes until then!

Also, just in case you didn't see the FindOut First, we will be starting 2 hours late tomorrow and dismissing at regular time.

So sorry for the inconvenience but we appreciate your flexibility as we try to get back to a normal schedule.

Stay safe! See you tomorrow!

Our class will be participating in the Book-It Reading Program this year. Students who meet our class goal for each month will recieve a certificate for a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.

This month, our goal is simply to read for at least 15 minutes every week day. Don't worry about recording for October, we have been working toward this goal in class. However, you should print out the Reading Logs attached below to record for the rest of the year. For more information, check out

Our class has worked so hard over the past several weeks learning about rocks, minerals, and Earth's ever changing surface. On Friday, we took our Geology Unit Test. It is obvious that everyone learned quite a bit!

Starting on Monday, October 15, Mrs. Day's Dudes will begin our Social Studies Units on Maps and Early American Civilizations. So if you aren't seeing Science homework, don't worry!

If you have any maps, travel brochures, or atlases that you are willing to share with our class, they would be much appreciated. Students will also need rulers with metric and standard units for our exploration of map scale. :)

As fifth graders, our students are given the opportunity to participate in the Great Heron Wetlands Photography Project and Calendar Contest! This is a fantastic project that allows students to improve their photography skills and observe the GHW right in UES's backyard!

Today, students participated in a lesson on basic photographic composition with a professional photographer. Starting tomorrow, they will be able to put what they learned into practice. Students have the option to submit their five best photographs for judging and consideration for the 2013-2014 Great Heron Wetlands calendar! All photographs must be submitted on a CD in jpg format by Wednesday, October 16, 2012 to be considered for the calendar.

For more information about the Great Heron Wetlands, check out the website at http://education.fcps.org/ues/wetlands
